THE CARRIZOZO WOMAN’S CLUB

Woman's Club

The Carrizozo Woman’s Club, founded in 1920, is a community service organization open to all women who enjoy volunteering their time for worthy causes.  Woman’s Club meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. from September through May.  All women are welcome to attend!

The Woman’s Club building is an outstanding example of Pueblo Revival Architecture built of adobe.  The ceiling in the unique round room, which is completely free standing, contains viga logs in an intricate wagon wheel pattern.  Built in 1929 by the WPA, the building is one of the showplaces in Carrizozo and is included on the State and Federal Registers of historic buildings.

The Club sponsors special Community Improvement Projects, some of which take several years of effort to complete.  In 1980, Casa Manana,  the low income senior citizens apartments across the street from the Woman’s Club, was finished.  The complex was one of five nationally recognized projects.  In 2005, the Happy World Playground Project in Spencer Park was begun; Phase I was installed in 2007.

Other functions the Woman’s Club sponsors include the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale, the Community Calendar, the Tried or True Rummage Sale, and the Hoedown Christmas Arts & Crafts Show.  Proceeds go to support community work, the annual scholarship award, and keeping the woman’s Club building in good shape.

Casa Manana APARTMENTS

Casa Manana Apartments

Casa Manana is a low income senior citizens apartment complex owned and operated by the Carrizozo Woman’s Club.  Sponsored by the USDA’s Rural Development Program, the units offer rent assistance for elderly disabled or age 62 or older.

Built by the Woman’s Club in 1980 as their Community Improvement Project, Casa Manana was honored by the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) and Sears, Roebuck & Company with an award for excellence.  Competition was “fierce” with entries from around the world all vying for one of the five awards.  Casa Manana  won 4th place and was well represented at the award ceremony in St. Louis, MO.

There are eight single story, one-bedroom apartments with a laundry facility and storage room.   Situated in a comfortable and cozy atmosphere, the Post Office, grocery store, senior citizens center, restaurants, art galleries and  a delightful old time ice cream parlor/gift shop are all within walking distance.
